LIVE: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Elected For 5th Term

Bangladesh Prime Minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina has been re-elected for the fifth term, with her party winning more than 50 per cent in an election marred with violence and boycott from the main opposition BNP.

Around 170 million Bangladeshis voted today to elect 299 lawmakers even as the Opposition boycotted the polls. Forty per cent of the eligible electorate exercised their franchise amid sporadic violence, officials said.

The run-up to the elections was marred with incidents of violence and arson where at least five schools and four coaches of a train were set ablaze on Friday. Four people died in the train fire.

Sheikh Hasina, whose government arrested thousands of rival politicians ahead of the polls, urged pro-democratic and law-abiding parties not to fuel ideas that "disrupt" the country's constitutional process, news agency PTI reported.

The Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia boycotted the polls. Ms Zia, 78, is under house arrest after being convicted in a corruption case.

The BNP is observing a 48-hour nationwide general strike that began at 6 am on Saturday.

Over 100 foreign observers, including three from India, are monitoring Bangladesh's 12th general election.

Here are the LIVE updates on Bangladesh Elections:

"Don't Attempt To Apply Again": Company's Rude Rejection Email Goes Viral

A rejection email has gone viral on social media for its needlessly rude and aggressive tone. US-based IT company Elite Software Automation sent the email to an applicant who had given a test for the position of Frontend Software Engineer. A screenshot of the mail was shared on the Reddit forum "antiwork", where it left thousands of users shocked. The post, shared on Thursday, has accumulated over 900 Upvotes and hundreds of comments.

The email begins by thanking the candidate for applying for the position of Frontend Software Engineer. It informs them that their application has been rejected due to their failure to clear the automated online test. The email then goes on to state that the candidate will be blacklisted permanently if they try to apply for the same position before the end of the year or if they write to the company for a second chance.

"Any repeated attempts to apply for this position again before this time, or any attempts to retake the test will lead to an automated decline of your application, as well as blacklisting of your profile from any further applications," the email read.

The email also mentions that the company does not accept any excuses. "If you were feeling unwell on the day of the test, or if you were rushing, or if your internet went out, or whatever other excuse you may have, it does not matter," it reads.

The mail also asks the rejected candidate to toughen up. "If you are upset at this email, we have to inform you that life is hard and part of any professional or personal development is dealing with rejection and finding ways to improve," it states.

"You were provided an opportunity to show your abilities in a blind and fair test that is the same for all candidates and that is focused on nothing but skills and abilities. You have failed to score high enough at this test. Instead of blaming us, you should examine what you can do to improve those abilities and skills. Maybe you could use this self-reflection to improve and make your life better," the mail added.

Since being posted, the screenshot of the mail has attracted largely negative reactions. "That's honestly the hardest rejection letter I've ever seen," wrote one user. "Seriously, this is like a walking red flag, imagine how they treat their actual employees," said another.

"Jesus Christ, I would make sure to apply again just to make sure I GET blacklisted by this excuse of a company," commented a third. "So companies no longer wait you to be hired to show how toxic they are," expressed a fourth.

Dunkin Donuts Sued Over Toilet Explosion That Left US Man Covered In Waste

A customer at a Dunkin' Donuts outlet in Florida, US, has filed a negligence lawsuit against the coffee chain, claiming that he was injured by an exploding toilet at the eatery. According to USA Today, Paul Kerouac is seeking $50,000 (approximately Rs 41.55 lakh) in damages after he said that he suffered "severe and long-term injuries" following the explosion of the toilet.

In his lawsuit, Mr Kerouac alleged that he visited the men's room at a Winter Park Dunkin', outside of Orlando, in January last year, when the commode erupted and left him covered in debris, faeces and urine. After the incident, he sought help from the employees, who told him they were aware of the issue as prior incidents had occurred, the outlet reported.

In his lawsuit, Mr Kerouac revealed that the incident took place on January 6, 2022. He detailed the horrifying aftermath, stating that he emerged from the men's room "covered with debris, including human faeces and urine". He also claimed that Dunkin' Donuts staff at the Florida coffee shop openly admitted awareness of "problems with the toilet".

"As a direct result of Defendant's breach and/or multiple breaches of its duties and obligations to Plaintiff, who was lawfully on Defendant's premises, Plaintiff unwittingly became the victim of the exploding toilet and of the aftermath which followed, and sustained damages, including injuries and emotional and mental distress," the lawsuit states.

Now, seeking justice, Mr Kerouac is demanding $50,000 in damages and legal fees on account of their alleged negligence. He is also seeking prejudgment interest, post-judgment interest, and costs of actions, plus a trial by jury.

Meanwhile, this is not the only lawsuit the coffee chain has seen in recent years. According to Fortune, an elderly woman won a $3 million settlement after a scalding hot coffee from the eatery spilled all over her in 2021, leaving her with horrific burns. The woman was ordering from the drive-thru window of a franchise located on Nelson Brogdon Boulevard in Sugar Hill, Georgia, near the city of Atlanta. As she received her drink, the lid came undone and the piping hot liquid spilled out. It splashed all over her, leaving her with severe second and third-degree burns that forced her to undergo skin grafts and a long period of rehabilitation.

Fardeen Khan Reacts To Zeenat Aman's Post On His Father Feroze Khan

Fardeen Khan, son of late actor Feroze Khan, shared his thoughts on Zeenat Aman's appreciation post featuring his father. Zeenat Aman shared an extensive note on her Qurbani co-star Feroze Khan on Instagram on Thursday. Sharing the post on his Instagram story, Fardeen Khan wrote, "Zeenat Aman aunty, if it's any consolation family wasn't spared either. We just received the standard family discount of 25 percent. Khan Saab would have loved your post. He would have laughed out loud" and dropped a few emojis.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Zeenat Aman started her post with these words, "I read somewhere that Oxford's word for the year 2023 is "rizz" - short for 'charisma'. Well, if I've ever known anybody to have rizz, it was Feroz Khan." She then shared an anecdote when she refused Feroze's offer and he "let out a stream of expletives." Zeenat Aman wrote, "Feroz and I had a rocky start. It was the 70s, my star was on the rise, and he called me on the telephone to offer me a role in his upcoming production. It was a secondary part, and so I politely refused the offer. Feroz was incensed and let out a stream of expletives while I held the receiver away from my ear!"

However, it was Feroze Khan who offered her the lead role in Qurbani. "Many months later, he called again. This time he started his pitch by saying - "it's the lead role so don't reject it". And that's how I joined the cast of Qurbani."

Zeenat Aman also shared a BTS story when Feroze Khan "docked" her pay to pay "the crew for that one hour delay!" "I often discuss set etiquette in my captions, so I'd be amiss to neglect Feroz's influence on me in this regard. I was quite a diligent worker, but on one occasion my youth got the better of me. Though we had an early call time the next day, I agreed to go out to a party. It was a fantastic night of dance and drink, and unsurprisingly I landed up one hour late to set. Feroz was glowering behind his camera, and before I could offer him my meagre excuse, he cut me down to size. "Begum, you're late and you're going to pay for the delay." No argument, no scolding, but you can be sure that he docked my pay to pay the crew for that one hour delay," wrote Zeenat Aman. Read her entire post here:

Zeenat Aman and Feroze Khan acted in Qurbani, which was directed by Feroze Khan himself. The film also starred Vinod Khanna, Amjad Khan. Feroze Khan died in 2009 after suffering from lung cancer. Feroze Khan was popular for films like Aurat, Safar, Mela, Upaasna, to name a few. Zeenat Aman is known for her work in iconic films like Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, Ajnabee, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Dostana, Laawaris and Dharam Veer. She will be seen next in Bun Tikki.

"What Killed The American Dream?" Reddit Post Sparks Discussion

The American dream is all about upward mobility. Any US citizen, if they work hard, should be able to not only succeed but also rise above the station of their parents. The US has used this simple ideology to become one of the great power nations of the world, socially, economically and politically. This principle has also attracted countless immigrants who fled their countries to live the American dream. However, now with the ongoing economic crisis, rising costs, increased credit card debt and wealth disparity, many are asking what killed the "American dream".

A post on Reddit titled "What killed the American dream?" has sparked a discussion among users. The post included a screenshot of another social media post that read, "Ordered pizza for my kids and my daughters math teacher is the person who delivered the pizza. This lady has a master's degree, makes less money than by dumb a** and has to deliver pizza to make ends meet. This aint the American dream they keep tryna sell us".

Reddit user FluentInFinance shared the post a few days back. Since then, it has garnered more than 31,000 upvotes. In the comments section users shared what they think killed the American dream.

"Neoliberalism killed it. Shareholder primacy killed it. Lowering corporations taxes and legalizing stock buybacks," wrote one user. "Over consumption, access to easy debt (credit cards, car loans, etc) keeping up with the neighbors, and government involvement and interference in the economy and especially Higher education," commented another.

"All depends on location. In my state teachers make 6 figures and all that I know live very comfortably," expressed a third user. "My neighbor is a teacher in one of the tougher areas of my city. He has 3 kids and his wife is a teacher too. He recently took a job at the airport too and they put him on the graveyard shift... so now he works overnight 3 days per week and then goes to teach. This country is broken," shared a fourth user.

Meanwhile, last year it was reported that the 'American dream' triggered a big crisis in New York. The quest for a better life and more opportunities has thousands of immigrants moving to the Big Apple. But at what cost? A housing crisis and a big burden on the administration.

New York City received 118,000 migrants since last year, over 60,000 of them housed in the city's shelter system. Most migrants came to New York from countries in South America and West Africa in hopes of safety, work and stability. But integrating them into a new city isn't an easy task - both for the migrants and the administration.

The migrant influx could cost $12 billion over three years, claimed Mayor Adams who has previously looked into housing migrants in parking lots and cruise ships.
